"Seven Churches" on Inis Mór
Collection:Valentine
Description:A photograph of a monastic site known as 'the seven churches'. This ancient monastic site was founded by St Breacán and is in Onaght on Inis Mór. Inis Mór is the largest of the three Aran Islands. The Aran Islands are off the west coast of Ireland. The name 'the seven churches' is applied to the ruins of two small churches and some domestic buildings. Although termed 'the seven churches' there are in fact only two churches. The title seven may be an allusion to the pilgrimage circuit of Rome which incorporated seven churches. In the photograph, there is an arched openings within one ruin and on its outside wall. There are headstones and tombs near the external archway. The fields beyond the ruin are separated by stone walls. There is a low wall in the foreground.
