A "watergate" is a hole in a wall through which goods would have been off loaded from ships. There is a label on the site which reads "E 402 Spanish Arch July 18 1988 Areas 10 11 Context 40cm.". The last line of the caption at the back of the photograph reads "Note the spud stones". The photograph was presented by Galway Corporation.
