Springlawn Volunteers
Description:A photograph of the Springlawn Volunteers drilling near Mountbellew, county Galway. All of the men are in civilian clothes except for one. Presumably, he is the drill sergeant. The men have rifles and are wearing caps. Many are wearing ties. The Volunteers were formed in opposition to the Ulster Volunteers. The aim of the Ulster Volunteers was to resist the granting of Home Rule to Ireland. The photograph was published in 1914.
