Kilbennan Church and Round Tower

Description:A photograph of the ruin of a church and a round tower in Kilbennan, county Galway. The site is associated with St. Benan or Benignus, St. Patrick's successor at Armagh, and the land for it was given by the local chieftain, Lugaid, who had been baptised by St. Patrick. There is an alcove with a statue on the gable end of the church. There is a graveyard and the name on one of the headstones is 'Donelan' and the name on the white headstone on the left of this headstone is 'Michael Lally'. The photograph was taken in 1953.
