Description:A photograph of the Kilcormac Pieta which is housed in the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Kilcormac, Co. Galway. The Pieta is a statue of Our Lady holding the body of Jesus after he had been taken from the Cross. The Kilcormac Pieta is carved from a block of solid oak. It is thought to be of Spanish origin having been donated to the parish by a rich lady in the sixteenth century. To hide it from Cromwell's forces it was buried in a bog where it lay for sixty years. According to tradition, at the time of its recovery, only one person was alive who knew of its whereabouts. He was brought on his death bed to identify its exact location.
