Year:1988
Description:A photograph of a cluster of reddish brown garnets (2cm) with associated glassy quartz. Garnets are typically minerals of metamorphic rocks although they also crystallise in igenous rocks. This specimen comes from the metamorphic rocks of Connemara, in Galway. Garnet can be used as an abrasive while unflawed specimens of good colour are cut into gemstones. The photograph was presented by the Geology Department of University College Galway.
